Bauhaus Archive – Museum of DesignBerlin2015

The Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design in Berlin has the world's largest collection of works, documents and literature related to the Bauhaus and makes them accessible to the public. The entry design for this invited competition with SADAR+VUGA involved the addition of a new museum building in the context of the listed Walter Gropius-designed campus to accommodate 7000m2 of exhibition spaces, visitor services, café, workshops, archive and administration.

This new museum building uses two main compositional elements: a closed, solid concrete exhibition block and a transparent public entrance foyer. Breaking up the solidity of the building volume above, this creates a strong contrast between the transparent public functions and the opaque exhibition spaces. A day-lit feature stair provides a welcome atmospheric break from the curated exhibition spaces. The use of coloured pigment in the concrete exhibition facades creates an unexpected playful effect in its materiality, colour, and texture, suggesting the museum is not a static object, but rather one that is in process.
