For this flagship store in Tokyo’s Ginza district, Casper Mueller Kneer developed a bespoke façade made from over 2000 unique ceramic pieces. Based on the Japanease tradition of ‘Noren’, a decorated curtain or screen placed in front of a store, Céline’s Noren is made from individual ceramic units set in steel ladder frames. The ceramics units are fabricated from an untreated white clay and are only partially glazed, each with their own unique colour and texture. They were fabricated a small workshop near Tajimi, a traditional ceramics area in Southern Japan. The rotation of each unit creates a varied pattern and movement across the façade, giving it a minimal yet animated appearance. To the interior, the facade offers filtered natural light and a degree of privacy. At night this ceramic facade is subtly illuminated. The ground-floor facade features Terrazzo Lavato, a bespoke exposed aggregate concrete, creating a rich textured surface, and large minimal steel windows. The internal spaces are unusually laid out: floors, ceilings and walls follow contrasting geometries, still achieving an overall harmony, a core of CMK’s store concept for Céline.
