Curzon Cinema HoxtonLondon2021

Curzon is an independent chain for repertory and arthouse film. Here at Hoxton, a three-screen cinema with bar, café and restaurant, a triple-height foyer space was central to the design, connecting the street-level entrance to the screens on the lower floor. Passing large lightboxes on entering, a staircase leads visitors into a lounge.

Materially, the monochrome palette avoided distraction, creating a focused environment. The main-space flooring is a custom-designed dark grey terrazzo with inserts of coloured aggregate. The entrance and foyer walls are made from porous through-coloured white acoustic panelling and ceilings use black acoustic foam. A grey mineral clay render on the restaurant walls absorbs sound.

Inside the cinemas, the material and colour palette are limited with wall curtains, dark ceilings and carpeted flooring. Raw, simple materials and accessible spaces support Curzon’s agenda: focus on film.
